Increasingly, college trends demonstrate that students are under-prioritizing health and wellness. The following campus recommendations, conversations and events aim to remind Kenyon students that safe and healthy habits are essential to academic success.
Eat Well
To eat well, students should aim to do the following:
- Develop a healthy eating style that reflects your preferences, culture, traditions and budget.
- Choose fruits, vegetables, grains, dairy and protein.
- Create an eating style that can be improved with small changes over time.
- Manage your time to eat regular, balanced meals in Peirce Hall daily.

Sleep Well
Adults ages 18-60 are recommended for seven or more hours per night of sleep. Developing good sleep habits are key to a good night's rest.
- Be consistent. Go to bed each night and wake up each morning at the same time
- Make sure your bedroom is quiet, dark, relaxing and a comfortable temperature
- Remove electronic devices from the bedroom (i.e. TVs, computers and smart phones)
- Avoid eating large meals, caffeine and alcohol before bedtime
- Exercise/physical activity during the day will help you fall asleep easier at night
- Work to change the Kenyon "Stress Fetish" mindset
- Prioritize sleep as a component of academic success

Events and Promotions
- [Event] On Thursday, Sept. 20, 2018, there will be a Common Hour panel, located in Peirce Dining Hall (new side). The panel will include Ryan Hottle (Kenyon Farm), Michelle Apple (AVI nutritionist), and Sarah Gabric (college counselor).
There will also be health promotion tabling by the Knox County Health Department in Peirce Hall during the lunch hour.
- [Event] Common Hour talk by Heather Petersen about "Sleep Promotion and Essential Oils" on Tuesday, Oct. 2, in Weaver Cottage.
- [Event] Screening of the documentary "Resilience: The Biology of Stress & The Science of Hope," co-sponsored by the Knox Health Planning Partnership, in the Community Foundation Theater on Tuesday, Oct. 23, from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m.
- [Promotion] The Health and Counseling Center will provide Wellness Kits, including Kenyon College sleep masks, for first-year students. Students should work to promote healthy sleep practices to their peers. The Health and Counseling Center will work with campus partners to target specific student groups and organizations.
