The first holder of the McCoy chair in 1998-99 was Professor Emeritus of Classics William McCulloh, followed by Theodore O. Mason, Jr., Professor of English from 1999-2003, Jeffrey A. Bowman, Associate Professor of History, 2003-07, Judy Holdener, Associate Professor of Mathematics 2007-2011, and Pamela Camerra-Rowe, Associate Professor of Political Science 2011-2015.

Kenyon College enjoys and cherishes a long-standing reputation for excellence in teaching. Having such a reputation is no accident, for excellent teaching skills are expected of all of Kenyon faculty and are celebrated as part of our mission and identity as a small liberal arts college. Although all Kenyon faculty are dedicated to outstanding teaching, on occasion a member of the faculty distinguishes him or herself as an exemplary teaching professional. It is such an individual whom we wish to honor with a Distinguished Teaching Chair.
The John B. McCoy - Banc One Distinguished Teaching Chair will identify that faculty member as a role model for faculty colleagues and as an emblem of our ideal of the teacher/scholar in the finest liberal arts tradition. This Distinguished Teaching endowed chair will honor an exemplary faculty member and underscore the long tradition of fine teaching at Kenyon College.
The John B. McCoy - Banc One Distinguished Teaching Chair is a four-year rotating position. Special duties of this chair are to serve as a mentor to new faculty as they work to develop their teaching abilities and to foster excellent teaching among the faculty as a whole through the organization of a program to encourage the exchange of ideas about good teaching practice. The position includes salary enhancement, program funds, as well as a one course teaching release to allow time for mentoring and program responsibilities.
If you are interested in applying for this chair, please submit a plan (1-2 pages) for enhancing and supporting teaching at Kenyon. This can be accomplished through seminars, presentations, colloquia, among other things. If you wish to nominate a faculty member, he/she will be notified and asked to submit such a plan as well. The plan should be one which can be supported within the parameters of a program budget of $3,000 and the time provided by one released course per year. Selection will be based both upon the strength of the faculty member's teaching skills and on the quality of the proposed program plan for enhancing teaching.
Term of Chair: 4 years, beginning in 2019-2023
Salary Stipend: $2,500 per year
Program Funds: $3,000 per year
Course Release: One course per year
