Eligibility
High school seniors who meet the criteria for admission to Kenyon College are welcome to submit applications for this competition. Those wanting to be considered for the Kenyon Writing Award must submit their scholarship form by January 15. Students are not required to major in English or take Creative Writing courses. Each scholarship ranges up to $15,000 per year and is renewable for four years as long as the student maintains an overall GPA of 3.0 or higher. All first-year applicants are eligible, including Early Decision applicants. Transfer students are not eligible.
How to Apply
Kenyon Writing Awards are determined on a competitive basis and require completion of both the Common Application and a Kenyon Writing Award form. Please note: All scholarship materials must be uploaded to the Kenyon Admissions Portal which will go live in mid-October. Applicants who submit after mid-October will receive access to their Portal account within a few days.
Submission guidelines are as follows:
- A five page portfolio of your work using double spacing, 1-inch margins and 12-pt font. All pages use a header containing your name (Last, First) and the page number.
- Submissions may include a variety of work, for example, five different one-page poems or one short story.
- Excerpts of a short story, novel or other longer work are permitted.
- Writing must be creative in nature; please do not submit analytical essays or book reviews.
Applicants are encouraged to select works that demonstrate their highest level of technical skill and overall writing ability. If you have any questions about portfolio materials, please feel free to contact Jack Eyre at 740-427-5784 or eyrej@kenyon.edu.
Each year, judges will select up to three winners as well as alternates. In the event that a student does not accept the scholarship, one of the alternates will be selected. All judges’ decisions are final.
