The Department of Classics has four tenured or tenure-track faculty: Professors Carolin Hahnemann (on leave 2018-19) and Adam Serfass, Associate Professor Zoë Sophia Kontes (on leave fall 2018), and Assistant Professor Micah Myers. Additionally, Assistant Professor Michael Barich annually teaches four courses. But theirs are not the only voices heard. Visiting Assistant Professor Naomi Campa joins us this year. Visiting Instructor Kathryn Caliva teaches two courses in the fall semester. Professor Emeritus William McCulloh offers a tutorial in Sanskrit. Two more emeriti round out the full roster of the department: Robert Bennett, a resident of Gambier, and Cliff Weber, who lives in Portland, Oregon.
Small classes in the languages foster close ties between students and faculty, and larger classes in classical civilization allow the department to engage a broad range of students in the study of the ancient Mediterranean. The department has been recognized for the high quality of its instruction: faculty members have received Whiting Teaching Fellowships, Kenyon’s Trustee Teaching Excellence Awards, and the Society for Classical Studies’ Award for Excellence in the Teaching of Classics.
