A More Efficient Athletic Center
Update: May 12, 2017
As of May 2017, electricity in the Kenyon Athletic Center (KAC) has been reduced by 19 percent, or $138,900, gas has been reduced by 47 percent, or $61,00, and water has been reduced by 32 percent, or $68,00. The total savings comes in at $268,000, which has been achieved by fixing valve and water leaks, a chiller economizer operation and other controls strategies.
Update: June 6, 2016
To reduce the Kenyon Athletic Center's carbon footprint, Kenyon is replacing a damaged energy recovery wheel. The wheel takes in exiting hot or cool air from the building and reuses it to heat or cool the building. The new energy recovery wheel is up to 46 percent more efficient than its predecessor. Annual savings on heating and cooling total $10,315.
The new energy recovery wheel will save an estimated 1,409 MMBtuh, which represents a total annual greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions savings of 132.9 tons of Carbon Dioxide Equivalent (CO2e).
To put this in perspective, using an EPA GHG equivalency calculator, 132.9 tons of CO2 is equal to carbon emissions from 14 homes’ energy use for one year, or 141,817 pounds of coal burned.
